Handmade Ryoten umbrella from renowned Hiyoshiya.
“The versatile Ryoten umbrella, suitable for both sunny and rainy days, is lighter and more sustainable than traditional vinyl umbrellas. Inspired by the traditional Ryoten used during the Edo period, Hiyoshiya has reimagined the umbrella’s design to seamlessly integrate with modern lifestyles, ensuring both comfort and practicality. After 13 years of refinement, the development of Ryoten has successfully combined elements from both modern and traditional umbrellas.
In the meticulous crafting of the Ryoten, Hiyoshiya employs 36 bamboo sticks to form its framework, complemented by durable washi-textured non-woven fabric. Diverging from the norm of western umbrellas, which typically incorporate 8-16 sticks, the Ryoten showcases double to quadruple the quantity of bamboo sticks. Intricately woven together, these sticks collectively create an umbrella that weighs approximately half as much as its Western counterparts.
In Japan, approximately 6000-7000 vinyl umbrellas are discarded annually. Ryoten addresses this issue by being designed for easy disassembly when being discarded. With a structure primarily crafted from natural materials such as wood and bamboo, Ryoten is inherently more environment friendly.”
